An indent on a piece of laser powder bed fusion produced 316L stainless steel imaged with differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy. We make use of indent tests to understand variations of hardness throughout our samples, depending on local solidification conditions. DIC is a powerful technique in optical microscopy which allows us to easily image and understand subtle changes in a surface’s surface height.
