AddME Lab

Principal Investigator

Dr. Matteo Seita (CV)

Matteo is a Granta Design Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering (Division of Mechanics, Materials and Design) at the University of Cambridge, and the head of the AddME Lab. Before joining the University of Cambridge, Matteo was Nanyang Assistant Professor at NTU Singapore, where he held appointments in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Asian School of the Environment.

During his tenure at NTU, Dr. Seita was awarded the prestigious NRF Fellowship—a S$3M individual grant for early-career scientists—to develop novel additive manufacturing strategies for microstructure control of metal alloys. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from ETH Zurich in 2012 and then spent three years as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT.

In 2022, he was selected as the recipient of the TMS Young Innovator in the Materials Science of Additive Manufacturing Award.

Dr. Le Tan Phuc

During his PhD, Le has developed novel in-line monitoring techniques to quantify the powder layer quality during LPBF processes, and to study the effects of powder bed defects on the mechanical properties of the material. Currently, Le is working on a proof-of-concept design to commercialize DRM.

PhD Students

Chenyang Zhu

Chenyang is originally from Shaoxing, China. After graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a Bachelor degree in Materials Science and Engineering (2019), he started his PhD at the AddME Lab and is currently supervised by Matteo and Huajian Gao at NTU. His current research focus is on DRM. He has developed new methods to interpret the optical signal measured during DRM on real engineering components.

Samuel Taylor

Sam is from Durham, UK. He completed a Master in Science degree in Natural Sciences with a specialisation in Material Science at the University of Cambridge (2023). He will begin his PhD in the Autumn at the AddMe Lab in Cambridge and is being supervised by Matteo. The research will focus on developing production methods for metallurgy using additive manufacturing.

Dylan Cuskelly

Dylan is from Ireland. He completed a Masters in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge. He will begin his PhD in the Autumn at the AddMe Lab in Cambridge under the supervision of Matteo. The research will be a continuation of his Masters research topic developing novel 3D printing strategies for nanostructured high performance steel.

Collaborators and Visitors

Dr. Menying Liu

Mengying Liu is an Assistant Professor at Washington and Lee University, Physics and Engineering Department. She earned her PhD in materials science and engineering at Texas A&M University, and her bachelor’s from Tianjin University. She is an American Association of University Women grantee, and is visiting Cambridge University in 2023-2024.

Dr. Gao Shubo

Shubo obtained his PhD from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Science and Technology Beijing. He is collaborating with the AddME Lab on research activities around recrystallisation of steels produced by laser powder bed fusion.
